About CPL

The CPL (Coach-Pupil League) is a a StarCraft: Brood War competitive tournament for players of all skill levels.

You sign up, we all get a skill check, and then we get grouped up into teams for the tournament. In your team you'll help each other prep for matches, learn new skills, and most of all you'll have fun screwing around in VC and on stream together.

The CPL is for everybody, so even if you're totally new to the game: just sign up! Know someone who likes BW but says "I'm not good enough"? Get them to sign up. No prior experience required.

CPL is entirely run by volunteers from the community.

So how does a CPL season work?

Sign up. Log in to the website using your Discord account, then use the registration form to get into the tournament. Fill out your basic details, like what race you play and what your general skill level is, and then sit in the CPL Discord server waiting for the announcements to pop up.
Preseason. Before the season starts, everybody gets put into groups of 4 or 5 players we all play as many games as we can against one another. All games are best-of-one. This gives us a better idea of everybody's level and helps everyone practice scheduling matches.
Team reveal stream! You learn who your coach and team mates are going to be, as well as what your tier is. Together you come up with a cool team name and logo and start prepping to win the season.
Regular season and playoffs. Every week you can sign up to play, and if you're put in the week's lineup you play a best-of-three against one opponent. After several round robins, we hold playoffs to determine which team wins the season.

How regular season works

To make matches fair, everybody is placed in a tier that matches their skill level. Aside from your tier there's also an MMR system to help us give fair matches.

Each team has coaches, assistant coaches and team admins. Coaches are strong players who are there to help you get better and prep for your matches. Team admins help set up the matches in the system and make sure everything is running smoothly.

If you have a match to play for your team, you're responsible for setting up a match with your opponent. Best thing to do is just contact them as soon as you find out what your match is, and tell them around what times you can play. Use Hammertime to have your times show up in their timezone. If they don't respond, contact your team admin.

Players are placed in tiers based on their MMR and how they did in preseason, so you'll mostly play against opponents of a similar level. Each team has coaches, assistant coaches and team admins. Getting involved and helping out

All league coordination happens on the CPL Discord server, so that's the place to start. When matches get cast, it's announced in the #cpl-official-streams channel on Discord, so keep an eye out for that. If you miss a cast, it'll be uploaded to our YouTube channel shortly after. We're always happy to welcome new casters, so please feel free to ask about that!
