[PvT] 1z1g rangeless expo

Author: DoodleDoodle

Pros: okay vs most factory openers Cons: a little bitsad vs rax fe or early bunker It's a safe pvt build that has potential to put pressure in the early game and gain econ advantage.

  • 8/9 pylon
  • 10/17 gate
  • 12/17 gas
  • 13/17 core
  • 14/17 zealot
  • 16/17 pylon
  • 17/25 dragoon
  • 21/25 range
  • 22/25 cut probe here
  • 22/25 when you have 150 mineral, send a probe to your nat, cancel the range upgrade and make nexus
  • 22/25 2nd goon
  • 24/25 pylon at natural and resume probe production
  • 26/33 range
  • 27/33 3rd goon
  • 29/33 robo (You don't make a pylon here as your nexus is about to finish and free up your supplies in time)
  • 35/42 2nd gateway
  • 37/42 observatory

Supply count above is based on when you kept all your units alive (including 1z1g1p). If you lost your scout probe and zealot, these numbers would be lower by 3. For example, your robo would be started at 26/33 instead of 29 if you lost probe and zealot during the fight.

So when do I attack?

  • If the opponent didn't see your zealot, hide it and attack with your goon and scout probe. Terran is likely to stop marine production after 3 if they didn't see an early zealot.
  • If the opponent saw your zealot, go in, poke around rax and factory but try not to lose any more than zealot's shield. If the zealot gets to damage the marines without losing hp, it will make your next attack even more powerful. (If a zealot attacks a marine twice, that marine will have 8hp left and your goon can finish it off with 1 attack) Also, if the scout SCV leaves your base before your 1st goon is out, follow it with a probe to prevent ebay block.

How do I control my units vs marines and vulture?

  • As mentioned above, if T didn't see your zealot, they'll stop after 3 marines. Against 3 marines and 1 vulture, you can actually just A-move and come out ahead. One thing you need to remember is that the zealot is your main dps at this moment so try to shove your goon in first to tanke marine/vulture attacks.
  • If Terran scouted your zealot or made 4 marines blind, your 1z1g1p can't really beat 4 marines and a vulture (with 1-2 scv). In this case, you have to back off immediately and poke around with your goon to check Terran's follow-up. If Terran is making a bunker, you' can just keep following the build order. If you don't see a bunker and instead see 4+ marines, you need to make a shield battery at your nat (This is why you make a pylon at your natural at 22/25).

Do I need to strictly follow the build order above?

  • There's not much room to change up the build order up until when you make your nexus at 22/25. At 22/25, you can choose between 2nd goon, pylon and range. Most common follow-up is going goon-pylon-range. However, if you feel confident with your goon micro or if it's cross spawn, you can go pylon-goon-range, pylon-range-goon or even range-goon-pylon. If it's cross spawn, going robo before range is also an option. I'd recommend sticking to goon-pylon-range if you're new to the build and need to practice the build. Once you feel more comfortable with it, try switching up the order accordingly and see how it feels.

What do I do against rax FE?

  • This is a bit of sad situation since early bunker is most likely to shut down your early pressure. If you first scout Terran's base, proxy robo is an option. If you scout it second or third, you can poke a bit with zealot and probe before the bunker is finished. Make your nexus at 22 and instead of making 2nd goon, make pylon and make probes nonstop. You can choose between robo before range (and fast reaver), or go range and take 3rd off 1 gate or even just follow the normal build path (the last option is probably the worst of 3).

As I mentioned, this is a build that can put pressure and also gain econ advantage. If Terran fails to deal with your initial pressure properly and their cc is delayed, sometimes you'll see their CC getting barely started when your nexus is almost finished. Other than the brief probe cut between 22/25 and 25/25, you should be making probes like a mad man unless you completely messed up the fight and lost all your units (in this case, you might have to cut probe and get 2nd gateway sooner just to survive the counter attack). Once you get 2 gateways and obs, your game state should be almost identical with 19/21/23 nexus builds. From here, you can choose between fast arb, reaver or 3rd.
